A few months after the United States entered the fighting of World War I, Dr. G.P. Gibner moved to the town of Hansford, Texas which had a population of less than 200. On Aug. 1, 1919, his son, Clay Gibner joined the Guaranty State Bank of Hansford after finishing business school. In November 1919, the Guaranty State Bank moved to the newly formed town of Spearman.
Near the beginning of the depression, in 1930, the bank was sold to a group of local Hansford businessmen, including Clay Gibner, and renamed First State Bank. Clay went on to become Bank President, taking on ownership and leadership responsibilities in 1952. The bank has remained in the same family since that time. Clay Gibner’s grandchildren, Lea Ann Gibner-Schrader and Stinson Gibner, who have served as Directors of the Board since 1990, continue to carry on their grandfather’s banking tradition of providing the Texas Panhandle a bank with strength, stability, and experience.
